NYISO is reporting a global NY electric usage of 31,970 MW (07/18/06 at 4:55 p.m.). This is a little higher than the projected peak load of 31,355 MW made by NYISO from this morning.
They have also activated its "Emergency Demand Response and Special Case Resources Programs" in Zones H, I, J and K from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., July 18. Zones J and K are NYC and Long Island, respectively.
ConEd and LIPA thank you for your support - naturally.
Posted by: |mr|Darcy at July 18, 2006 6:19 PMI'm going to guess the electricity will go out on your birthday. Its the city's little way of saying, "Happy Birthday!"
Posted by: Annie at July 18, 2006 6:46 PMright when I either get to Penn Station or am about 2 minutes into my subway ride up from 8th ave... that's when I predict it will happen.
Posted by: mike at July 19, 2006 11:01 AM"A pox upon your house!" The dear Lady did test and seemingly trip me!
I've been in NYC - and in parts Long Island - since Wednesday with 54 overhead line and underground crews! And rumor has it that the last customer account won't be brought back on until... Tuesday-ish... But that's just (solid) rumor...
I just hope that NYC (reportedly home of the Yankees) remembers that New England (well, Boston, but home of the Red Sox) does care and helps, when the need is there!
Posted by: |mr|Darcy at July 21, 2006 9:46 PMPOWER UPDATE: Tuesday is no longer solid as an end to the ongoing NYC restoration activities; in fact, Tuesday is squishy... PERIOD.
This restoration event will probably need another week or possibly two to be completed in its entirety - assuming no additional stresses upon the electric distribution system (e.g., t-storms) in NYC. ConEd is going manhole to manhole (10,000+) to confirm the extent of the problem.
We've sent a total of approximately 22 underground line crews to NYC from our NE and NY operation functions - along with a HOST of other utilities and contractors from various PARTS of the country.
ConEd can only energize 10 of its existing 22 distribution feeders into NYC. That means that they're overextending the existing (i.e. the 10 feeders) to make certain that the GREATEST number of customers remain with power. The problem (from a customer perspective) is that ConEd is running the RISK of loosing that which they know they already have – the customer loading on the 10 feeders (2,000,000+ customers). We'd DO the same (honestly) - the MOST number of customers in the shortest time frame possible.
"The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few - or the one."
BUT... It comes at a price. ConEd COULD burn through those existing 10 feeders - if the loading goes too high – and loose the remaining 10 feeders. Very tricky, at best! Therefore, for those in NYC relax and enjoy what summer has to offer! You can ONLY look back later and LAUGH upon what you had to endure during the summer 2006. Otherwise, no one will have anything…
