Perhaps the most important quote

"Perfectionism is the highest form of self-abuse."

* Read it in this month's Glamour mag interview with Ashley Judd who attributed it to her priest but who's the originator? We may never know.

Anne Wilson Schaef is usally credited with the quote... and Ashley Judd has popularized the quote more recently.

Oh, was that a display of perfectionism by trying to resolve the unknown?!?

I disagree with the quote, though - of course - because it does not go to the source.

While an "ism" defines the act, state, or theory of it's associated noun, it does not define the root cause of the act, state, of theory there of, which is truly the cause of the self-abuse.

The highest form of self-abuse is pride or more specifically hubris. There's nothing wrong with the state of being perfect, so long as you actually ARE perfect. It's when you pretend that you are perfect, when (in fact) you're not, that causes the self-abuse (among many other issues and concerns). Why would someone pretend to be perfect? Hubris or excessive/exagerrated pride.
