Thesis Defense Attire

I am nervous! This Thursday I'm going to my dear friend Celeste Peterson's thesis defense at Princeton. She's nervous, sure, but I'm really nervous. What do I wear?!

It's in the subject area of Molecular Biology. Repeat after me - Mole Ecu Lar Bi O Lo Gy. The study of the biology of moles.

I'm considering these seven looks.

1) The obvious choice might be good in terms of showing solidarity like Yeah, I'm a scientist too! Chemistry set!

2) Or I could be hard core but instead of fag I'd write SCIENCE (I'd keep the framing of the word the same).

3) How about an inspirational vision of purple/Prince so when she looks over I can throw her the 'I Would Die 4 U' signs at her?

4) Potentially too racy but could get the blood flowing in the room and have the judges (whom I'm certainly will be mostly male) to remember me, and hence Celeste, fondly.

5) Or I could just be professorial and ooze judgement...but show my softer more fallible side by making the mistake of wearing a beret.

6) Celeste and I got married within 2 weeks of each other so I thought as a way of remembering that sweet time I could wear my wedding dress?

7) Or I could just try to blend in:

Which should it be?? I'm stuck between 1 through 7.

The most beautiful person I ever knew was a Bio-Medical Investigator (with a degree in Molecular Biology)

She was always pretty stylish though...then again I think she was royalty. (either that or a test tube baby...her parents were also scientists, nuclear physicist(s))

I'm gigling just thinking about what kind of Google searches you had to do to come up with some of these pictures. It's not everyday that one wakes up and googles: "shotgun wedding dress". Bravo though! I'm sure Celeste is gunna love looking down from her podium seeing all the thought that went into such an outfit. I say it deserves a thesis of it's own!

Home for the holidays...and missing the...uhm...range (?) of topics discussed here! Well the absence of things that go "BOOM" oh-so-close to oneself and seemingly always unexpectedly is missed too... Regardless, though,... we must all endeavor to remember that biologists (molecular or otherwise) are people too!

Let's try that all together now, shall we. "Biologists are people too." There, there; not so difficult was it?!?

As an authorized, geeky biologist (i.e., an undergrad BA in Biology from Saint Anselm College in the fine liberal arts tradition of the Benedictine Order - said with a slight Thurston Howell III accent), I can only sympathize with Ms. Peterson's...ah...wardrobe choice...!?! No, no...I meant to say..."sympathize with her defense of the thesis", which is decidedly far more important than a discussion on brocade, plissé, or even matelasse!

Whether you decide to "work it" or "wear it", know that (in the end) it IS yours. That being the case, Look No. 7 converts my acetyl CoA to water and citrate WITHOUT any CoASH!
