As a NYC excapee I still follow thw news. The MTA strick has got to suck. A friend told me she saw a sign at a locked subway entrance saying "MTA Strike, Happy Holiday". With the same kind of sick humor I would like to pass on we are having a cold spell here in Arizona High of only 72. God, I love N.Y. (in the summer only). Just joking, I know this is hard on you guys.
Peace,
Posted by: Earnie at December 20, 2005 10:43 AMAs a former New Yawker my feelings go out to you all. Actually Andrea you can walk to an fro work easy. But the traffic has got to be hellish.
Hate to say it but MTA workers are underpaid and schtupped for their benefits as if they were the epsilons in New York's very own "brave new world."
Bloomberg and city lawyers are going to start a massive pr blitz to make it look like the transit workers are irrationally punishing the city. But this caca sits squarely (or roundly) on the lap of Bloomy. It'll backfire. Like a young appalachian prodigy that grew up to be Oprah's protege once said, "You can do lot's o things, but ya can't shine up a turd!"
Posted by: E&J Guzman at December 20, 2005 3:15 PMThis union has made a real tactical error. Now I'm no union lover but I do know how to make a point.
Here's what they should have done. Once the contract had expired, they should have showed up for work, and done their jobs as usual - driving the buses and subways. They should just have stopped collecting fares. Instant heros.

Excellent idea!
Posted by: Jeppers at December 21, 2005 12:48 AMIt would only work on the bus because you can't get into the subway without turnstiles. Plus Metrocard machines already have your money when you get the card.. Plus it would have required them to keep working..
I'm just glad I didn't heed a sudden whim I had last week to buy an unlimited monthly card.

It would work fine because you know those doors they buzz open for the people with lots of crap they can just prop that open
Posted by: Kingpin at December 21, 2005 11:35 PMAll the MTA has to do is ask the NY Transit police nicely to barricade the buzzable gates.
Posted by: Agulator at December 22, 2005 9:46 AMSo back to square one, Transit workers hurt the city, but now the city's memory is refreshed as to how pivotal transit worker's are to the underbelly of NYC's economy.
