I love The Cloisters & Fort Tyron Park

I was in a bit of a state Sunday morning, bitching about everything under the sun including 'the state of things' (this should never be left out) and thankfully Jonah suggested solving this discontent with a trip to The Cloisters which of course at first I was like, "A solution?! But I'm content to just sit here and complain! I'm good at this! Don't take it away from me!!" I snapped out of it and was intrigued. We had always wanted to go to the cloisters so finally we did and it was DIVINE. It's now my new favorite place on the island of Manhattan. Once you enter Fort Tyron Park which is just seconds away from the A train - 190 St. stop you are on a hill and feel far, far away from all the grittiness that we love and loathe about NYC.

It will be clear from this post that I had not been in nature for a while and that I love old things.

When I had... opportunities... to travel and visit sections of Germany's Rhine River Valley in 1989 and 1991 (pre- and post-divide, mind you), I was immediately obsessed with its medieval architecture and weighty presence. More importantly, its essence of "being" was defined clearly by its own apparent and readily observed history, people, and culture.

Similarly, when I visited The Cloisters in the summer 2001, those same memories awoke from a decade-long slumber. This place is unique (so far as the East Coast is concerned) in that it represents faithfully... how did Mr. Rumsfeld put it... "Old Europe" - yes, that was it! The posted pictures display only a fraction of The Cloisters' overall atmosphere.

This place is a definite "must", if you have the time - especially on a weekday; it can get busy on the weekend!

Hi Andrea,

I am addicted to your blog. It always makes me smile when I visit it. One question, which digital camera do you use. Your photo's are always so clear. Thanks,

Michael

Hi Michael from TX,

I appreciate your addiction! :-)

I use a Pentax Optio s4i which are probably only ~$300 at this point...it's not nearly perfect but I like how small it is and how big the screen is.

Thanks!
A

For some real fun, try going there with a cassette recorder and an electromagnetic radiation detector after dark. Like after midnight.
