8 1/2 Blues

Ok. Are you ready to hear this? Probably not. Am I a truth speaker? Always. Here it goes.

As I signed into my NetFlix account this morning to spastically make sure that slots 1 - 6 of my qeue were occupied by the remaining discs of the TV show 24's First Season (and thank the lord it was), I was met with this image and I've got to tell you, I knew I had to say something unheard of, unpopular...unprecedented!!

8andahalf.jpg

I DIDN'T LIKE FELLINI'S FAMOUS FLICK 8 1/2!! In fact, I STOPPED WATCHING IT AFTER AN HOUR!! I may not have been in the perfect mood for it but I LOVE TO THE Nth DEGREE Nights of Cabiria, La Strada, AND EVEN Juliet Of The Spirits but 8 1/2 JUST DIDN'T DO IT FOR ME.

There I said it. Do you still love me??

If you don't hear from me again you'll know that the Movie Police have taken me away. At that time, please at least do something like the Save Ferris campaign, ok?

We have no other solution but to condemn you. In punishment for your Crime of Limited Italian Taste (CLIT), you shall watch Ron Hubbard's Battlefield Earth no less than five times in a row.
And then post about it.

Wow - that's a harsh punishment. The book is one of the best I've ever read (I'm not even a sci-fi fan!) yet that movie was horrible.

But regarding 8 1/2 - I've forgiven you Andrea! I loved the movie and watching it with the commentary by the film historian really made the film much more interesting to me BUT I can definitely see how that film isn't for everyone. Even people who love other Fellini films.

The first time I saw 8-1/2 was with a bunch of other people, and the reactions to the film fell on decidedly gender-oriented lines. The males were fascinated, and the females either a) left early or b) stayed through the whole thing but didn't like it. The portrayal of women in the film is not wonderful certainly.

It's a film that you really have to have patience with the first time through. The ideas bubbling up through the film don't really gel until a couple of hours into it, and I always found it really impressive the way those threads do come together. I'll also say it's a film that improves with repeated viewings. It's gone, in my mind, from being a great film to one of my favorites.

|mr|Darcy rolls and rolls on the floor at Rubin's post!

And once finished with Battlefield Earth, it's Starship Troopers (the orginal AND sequel) for Ms. "Heretic" Harner!

But... I MUST say that there's a certain... redeeming quality - a penance perhaps (?) - in quoting from the "Sacred Text of Ferris". Therefore, Rubin's punishment alone should stand.

Trust me, this is a rather soft punishment. Last time I caught a guy who found "La Dolce Vita" "superficial and vain," I sentenced him to eighteen "Are You Stressed?" tests at the Times Square subway station.
He's been living in Buffalo ever since.

Dear Andrea,
We are going to have a very interesting time making movies together. This is the film which DROVE me into the film business. Not because I liked it, but because I HATED it. It made me want to make THE OPPOSITE of 8 1/2. In fact, I might still make The Opposite of 8 1/2. Which would be what? -8 1/2?, or 2/17ths?
Love,
Amy
